Gandhiji’s grandson demits office as West Bengal governor

Kolkata, Dec 13 (IANS) Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopal Krishna Gandhi Sunday bade adieu as West Bengal governor by hosting the state’s creme de al creme to tea after occupying the Raj Bhavan for five momentous years.

The 64-year-old former IAS officer and diplomat, who took over as governor Dec 14, 2004, found his tenure coinciding with the most volatile period the state has seen in three decades – peasant unrest fuelled by the opposition parties in Singur and Nandigram as well as largescale political clashes.

He responded to each of the events in a polite but firm manner, while never compromising on his dignity.

Babri razing done in military precision: Liberhan report

New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS) Severely indicting the Uttar Pradesh administration under then chief minister Kalyan Singh for being a willing ally and co-conspirator in the razing of the Babri Masjid, retired high court justice M.S. Liberhan in his report said the demolition was carried out with military precision .

The report of the Liberhan Commission, which was tabled in parliament Tuesday, blamed senior police officials for toeing the line and acting as uniformed karsevaks (supporters) rather than protectors in allowing the demolition of the 16th century Babri Masjid.

…December 6, 1992 saw a state of Uttar Pradesh unwilling and unable to uphold the majesty of the law. The ennui flowed from the very office of the chief minister downwards and infected the state’s minions down till the bottom.

Babri Masjid back in spotlight, Liberhan report to be tabled

New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS) Seventeen years after the demolition of the Babri Masjid, the Liberhan Commission of Inquiry will be tabled in parliament, Home Minister P. Chidambaram promised Monday as a political storm engulfed both houses following reports that the probe had indicted BJP leaders, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L.K. Advani.

According to a report published in the Indian Express, the Liberhan Commission had indicted the former prime minister and his deputy besides senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders like Murli Manohar Joshi. This was followed up by NDTV channel that said it had access to the probe report, which labelled the 1992 demolition as tailor made and also blamed Uttar Pradesh’s then BJP chief minister Kalyan Singh.

The report had been selectively leaked to the media, an outraged BJP said, demanding that the report, submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh June 30, be tabled in the parliament immediately.

Mulayam disowns Kalyan Singh after election rout

bjp
Lucknow, Nov 14 (IANS) Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Saturday virtually disowned Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rebel Kalyan Singh but blamed the Congress for his party’s humiliating defeats in the assembly and Lok Sabha by-elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Kalyan Singh was never a part of the Samajwadi Party, nor is he one today and let me also tell you that he will never be allowed to join our party, Mulayam Singh said at a press conference here.

Asked how far he held Kalyan Singh responsible for his party’s rout in the polls, Mulayam Singh preferred to attack the Congress instead. Well, for that matter, we have suffered more on account of other so-called friends, whose government we went all out to save, he said, referring to the Congress-led government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh which survived a vote of no-confidence last year with the support of the Samajwadi Party among others.
