LAS VEGAS – It’s high noon in Sin City on New Year’s Eve and a petite blonde wearing jeans, leather boots and a black, sheer blouse is tucked in a corner table at the Pink Taco Mexican restaurant in the Hard Rock Hotel.
A stiff wind would likely knock Ashley Samson over, though she still thinks she could stand to drop a few pounds. She picks at a plate of shrimp tacos as Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” blares over the sound system, and later orders a shot of Jagermeister.
After the last tumultuous five months of her life, Samson is probably hoping to ring in happier times in 2010.
In quick succession, Samson separated from her husband of five years, then helped kick-start the sports world’s scandal of the decade when she told the National Enquirer about Tiger Woods’ affair with New York party girl Rachel Uchitel – an interview that may have been one factor in triggering a confrontation between Woods and his wife in the early hours after Thanksgiving and a car crash that resulted in one of the most spectacular falls from grace of any athlete in history.
For her part in the drama that has cost Woods endorsements, respect and possibly his marriage in the wake of revelations of numerous extra-marital affairs, Samson says she was paid $25,000. A girlfriend of Samson’s who was not identified by the Enquirer backed up Samson’s account in the magazine and received between $10,000 and $15,000 from the tabloid, Samson says, adding that the cost to both women has exceeded any money they’ve received. In retrospect, she told the Daily News that she should have taken the $200,000 she says the Woods camp offered her to keep quiet.
Samson says her decision to blow the whistle on Woods and Uchitel has resulted in plenty of mental anguish, fractured friendships and added stress in her personal life and her marriage.
“I’m trying to get my f— life together and repair my reputation,” says Samson. “It probably would have been better (to accept the $200,000) because what ended up happening was a big mess.”
Samson says she is bitter about the way Uchitel trashed her during interviews once the scandal broke, saying she didn’t know Samson, although photographs later emerged showing them together. One moment Samson was lying on a bed next to Uchitel in Spain and listening to Uchitel’s steamy phone conversations with Woods. A month later, an all-out verbal war with Uchitel erupted.
Samson says she has weighed legal action against Uchitel, though Samson won’t comment on where she currently stands on that matter. Samson would like a return to a normal life, she says, maybe re-enter the business world – she owned two Vegas businesses in the past; a garage door company and a handbag accessories company – but isn’t sure if her link to the Woods scandal will create some hurdles.
Tiger Woods’ family is heading to Sweden for the holidays, but the disgraced golfer is not going with them – he’s hanging with “the boys.”
“He is very contrite, but he’s also disoriented,” a longtime friend of Woods told the Daily News on Tuesday. “He still can’t believe this is happening.”
Woods, whose image has been wrecked by reports he cheated on his wife, Elin Nordegren, with a bevy of babes, is stressed out but “not on sedatives,” the source said.
The golfing great is looking for a safe harbor and “waiting for the storm to settle.”
“He’s been talking about going away with two or three of his friends, just the boys,” said the friend, who has known Woods since the golfer was a teenager.
“They’ve been trying to figure out a place that would be safe.”
Woods’ posse includes his newly married pal, Byron Bell, whose name was drawn into the scandal when it was revealed he helped deliver New York party girl Rachel Uchitel to Australia for a reported rendezvous with Woods.
The other “boys,” according to the source, are college pals from Stanford.
“Their wives aren’t happy,” he said.
Neither is Nordegren, who has said nothing publicly about her husband’s “transgressions” – and who was not wearing her wedding ring in recent photographs.
“Elin is planning to take the kids to spend the holidays with her family in Sweden,” the source said, who added that the $2 million island hideaway Nordegren bought before the scandal erupted is probably not where she will spend Christmas.
“Tiger and Elin bought that for her mom as a weekend place,” the source said.
Woods’ friend said it’s likely the golfer cheated on Nordegren with more than the dozen or so women who have already emerged since Thanksgiving.
“But some of them probably don’t want to come forward,” he said. “The first couple of mistresses seemed special. They don’t want to be No. 42.”

Although Woods was supposed to be catnip to many women, he sounded jealous in a text message as he grilled cocktail waitress Jaimee Grubbs.
“Who is your new boy toy?” he demanded.
As if all that wasn’t humiliating enough, Playgirl claimed to have nude photos of Woods and is vetting them for possible publication.

Woods has made no public statements since he apologized last week for his “transgressions” – after smashing his SUV near his Orlando mansion on Nov. 27.
At least eight women have come out of the Woods-work – their claims of sexcapades bolstered by messages from the golfer. Woods’ wife caught the 33-year-old golf icon texting Uchitel shortly before he stormed out of the house and crashed the car.
In messages obtained by InTouch magazine, Woods got all warm and fuzzy with Uchitel, 34, a New York party girl who lost her fiancé on 9/11.
“I want you to lay next to me, lay on me or where ever you want to lay,” he texted on Nov. 9.
“Why didn’t we find each other years ago. We wouldn’t be having this conversation.”
Later on in the correspondence, Woods accused Uchitel of hooking up with him because “I’m just another person who happens to be famous.”
“No comment,” Uchitel’s celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred responded when asked if the messages were legit. Uchitel, who initially denied having an affair with Woods, was mum when a Daily News reporter approached her yesterday.
She later treated herself to an hour-long Chinese back and foot rub at her pad in the Meatpacking District.
The masseurs told The News her shoulders were very tight.
New text messages Woods purportedly sent Grubbs also were made public.
In a batch from September and October released by US Weekly, the 24-year-old shamelessly discussed her “new piercing.”
She felt comfortable enough to jokingly call golf “boring” and refer to Woods as “my first, last and only black guy!”
